5 Ways To Care For Your Curls Naturally

Curly hair. One minute it’s a magestic crown of bouncy perfection, the next it’s a frizzy, untamable bird's nest. If you're nodding along, you know that caring for curls can sometimes feel like a full-time job. But don’t fret curly-haired comrades, we're here to help with some simple tips to help keep your curls natually hydrated, soft and bouncy every day of the freakin' week. Say buh-bye to the frizz and flyaways, and HELLO to ravishing ringlets!

1. Skip On Sulfates & Silicone

When you have curly hair, finding healthy and helpful products for your specific hair type is key to achieving soft, defined curls that look and feel healthy. Curly hair tends to be more prone to dryness and frizz because the natural oils from your scalp have a harder time traveling down the twists and turns of each curl. Therefore, choosing products that cater to the specific needs of your curlicues can make all the difference in maintaining bounce, definition, and moisture.

The wrong hair products can leave your curls feeling overly dry, weighed down and lacking the bounce and shine you want. The two most common ingredients we think curly-haired folk should avoid like the plague are sulfates and silicones. While these are commonly found in many mainstream shampoos, conditioners, and styling products, they can do more harm than good for your hair, parti-curl-arly curly hair...(see what we did there?). Here’s why.

Sulfates are cheap detergents used in shampoos remove dirt and oil from your hair and scalp, but they're notorious for being harsh on the hair and scalp. When sulfates overstrip your natural oils, it can wreak havoc on your curls, leaving them dry, brittle, and more prone to breakage. Over time, this can make it harder to maintain healthy, moisturized curls, as they need those natural oils to stay hydrated and defined. For curly hair in particular, using a sulfate-free shampoo is a much gentler way to cleanse without compromising moisture.

Milk Shampoo: A creamy, sulfate-free shampoo that gently washes your hair with natural cleansers, so your curls won't be left stripped, dry and brittle; a recipe for fanatic frizz. It also contains Milk Protein which is easily absorbed by hair fibers to revitalize it’s natural protective layer for stronger, easier-to-manage curlies.

Silicones are often used in conditioners and styling products to give hair a smooth, shiny finish and reduce frizz, but they can be problematic for curly hair in the long run. Since silicones aren't water-soluble, they can build up on the hair, weighing down your curls and preventing moisture from getting in. This build-up can make curls look and feel flat, and often requires harsh sulfates to be removed. To keep curls light, bouncy, and well-moisturized, it's best to avoid silicones or look for silicone-free products that allow your curls to thrive without the added weight.

Cream Conditioner: A creamy, silicone-free formula that deeply but lightly hydrates hair helping to tame frizz and boost shine, all while leaving your hair feeling light, soft and detangled. It also contains Milk Protein which is easily absorbed by hair fibers to revitalize it’s natural protective layer for stronger, easier-to-manage curlies. Pro Tip: When rinsing, use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle curls in the shower, starting from the tips and working your way up. This ensures an even coat of conditioner, reduces hair breakage and helps avoid post-shower brushing to keep curls curlier.

3. The "No-Poo" Method

No, we're not talking about digestion or anything related to your bowel movements. "No-Poo" is a hair cleansing method that simply means "no sham-poo", but this doesn't mean you have to rock dirty hair for the rest of your life. There are a few different options when it comes to going "no-poo", including using scalp scrubs, dry shampoos, hair rinses etc. We won't go into details about those, but we do want to highlight one method that's quite courteous to curls.

Sometimes called co-washing, or conditioner washing, as these names imply, you skip shampoo and only use conditioner to cleanse your curls. While you can do this with any hair type, it's especially effective for curly hair that needs more moisture than other types.

In this process, the conditioner hydrates AND cleanses your curls, which can seem counterintuitive, but based on the chemistry rule “like dissolves like”, the oils in the conditioner wash away the excess oils on your hair and scalp without the stripping effect of sulfates. Curly haired cuties all over the country have touted this a "cure for curls". Think of it like oil-cleansing for your scalp.

Our Cream Conditioner is perfect for this as it's silicone-free and lightweight. It's creamy consistency gives plenty of moisture and definition, without any buildup, leaving spirals super springy.

Pro Tip: Use a silicone-tipped scalp brush (the only time silicone is helpful in hair care) to massage your scalp and distribute the conditioner evenly for more effective cleansing. This can also help detangle hair and promote better scalp circulation, both of which can be beneficial factors in healthier hair growth. It also feels delightful.

4. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

When shopping for hair care products, we recommend prioritizing hydrating formulas that are sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free, and enriched with nourishing, hair-friendly ingredients and natural oils (such as Jojoba and Coconut Oil).

As you should now know, curly hair is naturally drier than other hair types, so keeping it moisturized is a priority. Using a leave-in conditioner is a great way to add extra moisture to curly hair, applied where it's needed most to help prevent split ends and reduce hair breakage. It helps s-MOO-th out frizz and flyaways, and is the perfect way to keep curls soft, defined, and moisturized throughout the day.

Protein Shot Leave-In Conditioner: Our creamy, silicone-free hair treatment deeply but lightly hydrates hair helping to boost its strength and shine, all while leaving your hair feeling light, soft and detangled. It's creamy consistency gives curly hair plenty of moisture and definition, without leaving any buildup or residue. It also contains Milk Protein which is easily absorbed by hair fibers to revitalize it’s natural protective layer for stronger, easier-to-manage curlies. Pro Tip: Apply to wet or dry hair, as often as you like or need. You only need a pea-sized amount as a little goes a long way. If you're doing any heat-styling, this will help protect hair from damage.

5. Protect Your Curls At Night

We all know curls can be a bit...unpredictable, especially at night when they’re left to their own devices. To wake up with frizz-free, tangle-free curls, try switching to a silk or satin pillowcase. These materials create less friction than cotton, helping your curls stay smooth and defined, and reduce dreaded breakage. Plus, they’re gentle on your skin, too! This one’s a game-changer.

For an extra measure of protection, find yourself a bedtime hairstyle. Tie your hair up in a loose, protective bun, braid or pineapple style to keep your curl shape intact overnight. Don’t have a silk or satin pillowcase? No problem. Once you’ve got your boudoir hairstyle sorted, cover it with a silky headscarf or hair bonnet. You might look like you're about to bake fancy pastries, but the benefit is well worth the extra effort. Your hair will thank you in the morning.
