The Importance of Double Cleansing
It’s easy to skip or rush through cleansing, especially after a long day or a few glasses of wine. However, neglecting this crucial step can leave your skin clogged with dirt, grime, and makeup, leading to acne, blackheads, or a dull complexion. If clear, glowing skin is your goal, cleansing is the MOST important step in your skincare routine! Double cleansing offers a thorough clean that your skin will love. What is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing might seem like a new trend, but it actually originated in Korea in the 14th century and has become a skincare staple since then! Double cleansing involves a two-step process that ensures your face is fresh and clean by removing dirt, makeup, environmental pollutants, and dead skin.
The process includes using two products: a cleanser that removes oil-based impurities such as oxidised sebum, SPF, makeup, and pollutants, followed by a second cleanser that addresses your specific skin type or concern. This way, any serums, moisturizers or treatments applied afterward can work more effectively!
Benefits of Double Cleansing
-
Prevents Sebum Build-Up and Bacteria: Sebum and bacteria on the skin can cause infections leading to acne or breakouts. Double cleansing helps wash away these impurities.
-
Removes Pollutants: City living exposes us to high levels of pollutants. Double cleansing removes these pollutants, which can otherwise contribute to aging and pigmentation.
-
Improves the Efficacy of Other Skincare Products: Double cleansing ensures your face is extra clean, allowing other skincare products to penetrate better and work more effectively.
-
Brightens Complexion: Regular double cleansing helps remove dullness and dead skin cells, leaving your complexion glowing every single day!
-
Helps Dry Skin: Using gentle products is more effective and less drying than using one strong product.
How to Double Cleanse
Double cleansing is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Choose the right cleansing duo based on your specific skin concerns and preferences. It's also something you can play around with to see what works best for you. Here’s how it works:
Step 1
Typically this is done with an oil-based cleanser like our Oil Cleansing Method as it's made with a combination of moisturizing and drawing oils to get deep in pores and cleanse the skin without stripping it of its natural oils. It sounds counter-intuitive to cleanse with oil but oils can dissolve hardened sebum that can get stuck in your pores, and also help remove other impurities such as built up dirt, sweat and makeup. This is a particularly good choice for those with dry and/or blemish-prone skin and the accompanying massage always feels good.
If cleansing with oil isn't your thing, or you don't have one in your skincare repetoire, you can also use a clarifying cleanser such as our Gentle Foaming Face Cleanser for the first round. This will break down and remove SPF and makeup, and remove dirt, debris and sebum build-up. This pH-balanced face wash contains Papaya Fruit Extract to clarify the skin with gentle, enzymatic exfoliation and Calendula Extract to soothe sensitivities, breakouts and redness. It’s perfect for all skin types, from dry to oily, as well as blemish-prone skin.
Step 2
For the second step, the cleanser you use will depend on what you used in the first step. If you used an oil-based cleanser, the second cleanser should be a clarifying one to remove the excess oils left behind from the first cleanse. An excellent option here is our silky-smooth Creamy Hydrating Face Cleanser, made with coconut and glucose-based cleansers to gently cleanse without stripping the skin and it’s also suitable for all skin types. Your skin will be in hydrated heaven.
If you used something like our Gentle Foaming Face Cleanser in the first step, follow up with a hydrating cleanser like our Creamy Hydrating Face Cleanser to infuse moisture and remove any remaining dirt, debris and sebum from the pores.
Another option here, is use an oil-based cleanser for the second step (or third step if you're feeling adventurous). Applied with a warming massage, this will give your skin the nourishment and hydration it's been dreaming of. Once adequately rubbed in, the oil-based cleanser can be rinsed or massaged off with water, or alternatively, it can be wiped off with a warm face cloth depending on how much oil residue you prefer to keep on your face. When done at night, this is a great way to add some extra hydration and nourishment to your skin before following with your favourite face serum.
