Our Milk Shampoo is one of the first products we ever created, and it was originally made for a family member with an extremely itchy scalp, so much so that they would go to bed with olive oil on their scalp and cling wrap around their head. It took 6 months of trialing a flock full of different formulas until they could banish the cling wrap back to the kitchen for good.
Not all shampoo is created equal
The point of shampoo is to clean your hair. We use natural cleansing ingredients that remove excess oils but won’t leave your hair dry and brittle, and your scalp screaming for salvation. Our effective formula is made with a combination of 5 different naturally derived cleansers to give your hair a gentle, deep clean.
We steer clear of harsh detergents and sulfates like SLS, which are often found in shampoos but are also used in commercial floor cleaning products - no thanks!. SLS is the most common one, but there are others to keep an eye out for on product labels, usually big words ending in –fate. We think these are too harsh to be used on humans (and pets for that matter) because they strip out and wash away too much oil and moisture from the hair and scalp, often leading to itchiness, irritation and dryness.
Getting to the root of the problem
Shampoos that claim to “wash away flakes” are usually made with a high percentage of sulfates and detergents to simply strip away the symptoms (aka flakes), but they inevitably return, often with a vengeance, and the cycle repeats. We don’t think this heavy-handed approach does your scalp any good as it can further dry it out causing more irritating itchiness and can end up exacerbating the problem in the long run. We take a more causational and holistic approach, fighting flakes by diminishing dryness and infusing invigorating ingredients that revive and rebalance the scalp.
More than just hair washing
As well as getting the cleaning job done, there’s quite a bit more about our formula that we'd like to brag about. We only use high-quality, natural ingredients that keep your hair and scalp nourished and moisturized, and our innovative shampoo soothes itchy scalps and helps maintain a balanced microflora.
We also tossed in a healthy dose of Milk Protein which is easily absorbed by hair fibers and creates a protective protein layer. It also gets into every layer of the hair cuticle and revitalizes hair’s natural protective layer giving you stronger, easier-to-manage, more resilient hair. But what's in our all-natural shampoo is just as important as what's not. It also contains no parabens or other synthetic preservatives like yucky phenoxyethanol.
Less foamy but more healthy
Natural cleansers are not only gentler on the hair and scalp, but they’re also much better for the environment when they’re washed down the drain into our waterways. But we think it’s important for all hair-washers to know that the foam and suds created by natural cleansers is noticeably less than those made by cheap and simple sulfates. This means a little more agitation is required to build up the lather in the shower. Think of it like an excuse for a head massage, or a mini arm workout. We’re happy to make this small trade-off to use healthier ingredients.
Our scalp-friendly formula is one of our top-selling products every year, helping people achieve luscious locks, an itch-free scalp and happy, healthy hair and heads. Let us know if you have any questions and we’ll do our best to wash your concerns away.
On the topic of hair washing, all the cool kids are into using Dry Shampoo these days. We make a great one of those too, and it's aerosol-free! Skip a wet wash every now and then to save water!

Is Milk Shampoo safe for colour-treated hair?
For those out there that colour their hair, a colour-safe shampoo is basically any shampoo that doesn’t contain sulfates (like SLS or SLES) and is not alkaline. You already know that we steer clear of sulfates because they strip the hair of its natural oils, but they also tend to quickly remove colour too. Alkaline hair products (like most shampoo bars) cause hair cuticles to open up and allows colour to leach out. Our Milk Shampoo has a pH that is slightly acidic, making it safe and suitable for colour treated hair, helping your colour stay put and vibrant.
Has your Milk Shampoo formula changed recently?
Yes, we did make a few small changes to our formula. Over the years, we'd received feedback that our Milk Shampoo, although it had rave reviews for being kind and gentle to sensitive skin and scalps, we were hearing it was a little bit drying to the hair. This wasn't much of a problem as it was usually followed with our hydrating Cream Conditioner. But we always stay up-to-date with new and innovative natural ingredients, and when we came across Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, we wanted to include it in our shampoo formula.
SCG is an ultra-gentle, natural cleanser derived from Glucose and Coconut Oil. Including this ingredient makes our formula more conditioning to the hair and even more gentle on the skin and scalp. We also made a few other small tweaks to the formula, which included removing Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate to make room for SCG and adding in some Guar Gum to make sure the texture was just as lovely as it was before.
Your Milk Shampoo has a fragrance. Aren’t fragrances bad?
We designed our Milk Shampoo to be suitable for people with itchy and sensitive scalps, but we also know that many people, including ourselves, enjoy having a fragrance in our hair products. To give our Milk Shampoo its delicious, signature scent without compromising its gentleness and non-irritating nature, we use a special hypoallergenic fragrant oil, a proprietary blend whereby each component in it is less than the EU allergy threshold. Also, it’s free from phthalates, which is a major concern in fragrances.
I can’t seem to get all the product out of the bottle? Help!
Products with higher viscosity can be harder to dispense through a pump when the product is running low. To get your hands on the last bit of product, simply turn the bottle upside down and allow it to make its way down with the help of gravity. Later when you unscrew the cap, the product will be there ready for you to use and enjoy. You can also add a small amount of water to the remaining product and shake it to make it a bit thinner so it can more easily be dispensed through the pump or poured into your hand.
Is Milk Shampoo made of milk?
We aren’t called MooGoo because our products are made with milk. Putting fresh milk into a hair care product and putting it on a shelf would not end well. We use ethically and sustainably sourced Milk Protein from a credible Australian supplier.
Is Milk Shampoo suitable for children?
Our Milk Shampoo is made for the whole family! For all ages, from adults to newborns, and everything in between. It’s even gentle enough to be used on delicate baby scalps. Since it's free of sulfates like SLS, it's a tear-free formula too. If allergies are a concern, as with all natural products, we recommend a patch test before use.
Where do you source your Milk Protein?
When sourcing ingredients, animal welfare is a topic that we’re very mindful of. We source our Milk Protein from a credible supplier in Australia and we spoke with them extensively to ensure that ethical practices are implemented throughout their business.
What is the pH level of your Milk Shampoo?
Our Milk Shampoo is slightly acidic, balanced to the pH of human skin at 5.5 to 6.0.
I have a sensitive scalp; will I react to Milk Shampoo?
Everybody is different and what works for some will not for others, and some people have allergies to natural ingredients. We believe that natural ingredients are gentler on the scalp, and are particularly suitable for those that are red, irritated and itchy. If you're experiencing scalp issues or sensitivity, we always recommend doing a patch test before use.
Are your products tested on animals?
The only animals we use for testing are our own bodies. We never test on animals and will not export to countries that do.
I have dry / oily / damaged / thin hair. Will Milk Shampoo work for me?
We often get asked why we don’t make different shampoos specific to different hair types such as damaged / thin / curly hair etc. While we believe that people have different hair types, if you look closely at ingredient labels, you’ll notice there often isn't much difference between products specifically made for each variation.
A shampoo made for thin or damaged hair is usually lower in sulfates so they’re slightly gentler on the hair, but they also often contain silicone-based ingredients to coat the hair to make it ‘feel’ thicker and stronger. This usually leads to build up on the hair that may require a clarifying shampoo to remove. Our Milk Shampoo makes a good one of them too.
Whether your hair is curly, wavy, straight, thin, thick, long or short, conditioner should hydrate your hair without causing problems. In our opinion, we don’t think different shampoos are necessary; you only need one good one (like ours!) and vary the amount you use depending on how much is needed for your head of hair.
I have curly hair. Will Milk Shampoo work for me?
A shampoo made for curly hair is also usually lower in sulfates so they’re slightly less damaging but the best kind of shampoo for curly hair is one without any sulfates at all. Sulphates strip natural oils from the hair causing dryness which often leads to unwanted dryness, frizz and flyaways. Curls and waves tend to look and feel their best when hair is kept healthy and hydrated, and not covered in buildup weighing them down.
Our Milk Shampoo, as well as our Cream Conditioner and Protein Shot Leave-In Conditioner, is a product that many followers of the Curly Girl Method regularly use.
Is it better to wash your hair twice?
The amount of foam your shampoo creates has nothing to do with how well it cleans. In fact, shampoo tends to be less foamy when it's busy getting down and dirty with your hair grease because the cleansing ingredients are attaching themselves to your excess hair oils. That’s why the suds tend to be bigger when you wash your hair for a second time, because there's less oil to cling to.
Now knowing that, it isn’t necessarily better or worse to wash your hair twice, it’s mostly a matter of personal preference. You only really need to wash your hair twice if you tend to accumulate a lot of excess oil and one wash doesn’t feel like enough or if haven’t washed your hair in ages and feel the need for a second one.
Is natural shampoo good for your hair?
Detergents and sulfates like SLS, are often found in shampoos but are also used in commercial floor cleaning products. We think these strip out and wash away too much oil and moisture from the hair and scalp, often causing itchiness, irritation and dryness. We think switching to a gentler, more natural shampoo is one of the best things you can do for your hair and scalp.
Is natural shampoo better for the environment?
Natural cleansers are much better for the environment when they’re washed down the drain and enter our waterways as they break down more quickly than synthetic ingredients.
Does natural shampoo work?
Natural shampoos work just as well at washing the hair as their synthetic counterparts. But the foam and suds created by cleansers in natural shampoos is noticeably less than those made by their commercial counterparts, which can make it feel less effective. We think this trade-off is well worth the extra benefit.
Does natural shampoo strip color?
A colour-safe shampoo is any shampoo that doesn’t contain any sulfates (like SLS or SLES) and is not alkaline. A natural shampoo that is made without sulfates won’t strip the hair of its colour, and if the pH is slightly acidic, then it's safe for colour treated hair.
Why is natural shampoo better?
Natural shampoo is made with natural cleansing ingredients that don’t strip the hair and scalp of their natural oils. Natural cleansers also break down faster once they reach our waterways.
Why does shampoo make my scalp itch?
Detergents and sulfates like SLS, are often found in shampoos can strip out and wash away a lot of the natural oil and moisture from the scalp, often causing itchiness, irritation and dryness.
