What Baby Skin Really Needs
If there’s one thing that everyone knows, it’s that baby skin is the best: soft, smooth and squishy. But that surface-level perfection can be misleading because baby skin is a lot more complicated than it looks. While gentle skincare is the best choice for everyone, it’s especially so for babies while their skin is still developing. It’s important to understand how baby skin is different than adult skin, so you can make the most informed skincare choices for your little ones. Let’s take a look at what’s actually going on under those squishy chins and chubby elbow creases.
Baby Skin Is Thin and Delicate
Our skin's main job is to act as a barrier, protecting us by keeping irritants out and moisture in. A baby’s skin barrier is still in the process of developing and maturing, and therefore baby skin is significantly thinner than adult skin, which means moisture loss and reactions can occur quickly and easily.
This is why babies can go from a dewy cherub to a flaky marshmallow overnight. Their skin doesn’t have the same structural resilience we usually have as adults. Dry patches, redness, and irritation can appear suddenly, and even ordinary things can be triggering. Too much bathing, strong fragrances, or anything that strips natural oils can tip the skin's delicate balance. Adult skin benefits from barrier-supportive care, but baby skin relies on it. Maintaining a healthy skin barrier with nourishing products is more important now than ever.
Baby Skin Absorbs So Much More
While adult skin is generally quite good at keeping things out, baby skin is more permeable while it’s developing, so it absorbs ingredients more readily. Like a sponge, it soaks in more of what is applied and reacts more dramatically when something isn’t a good fit (sounds like most babies we know). This is why what goes on baby skin needs careful consideration, and simple, gentle formulas, in our opinion, are the only suitable choice for tiny humans.
Harsh preservatives, strong fragrances, complex formulations, or unnecessary additives can quickly overwhelm skin that hasn’t yet built its natural defences yet. This isn’t to say adult skin should be exposed to these kinds of aggressive ingredients either, but baby skin simply has less protection in place and can quickly show its negative reactions.
Their pH Balance Is Stabilising
Healthy skin sits at a slightly acidic pH, which helps maintain barrier function and a healthy microbial balance. Babies are born with skin closer to neutral and this shifts gradually as the skin matures. This acid mantle, aka the skin’s natural protective film, plays a big role in defending against irritation and unfriendly microbes. Since babies are still building up this defence system, they’re more vulnerable to ingredients that are too alkaline, too acidic, or just a bit too much overall. Gentle, pH-balanced products help support this natural process rather than interfering with it.
While babies are talented at getting themselves messy, their skin doesn’t need constant scrubbing. Over-cleansing or using products that are too harsh, can compromise skin health. A gentle cleanser (or good old-fashioned warm water) is usually enough.
Their Immune System Is Still Learning
Just like their skin, your baby’s immune system is also very much in training mode. Skin and immune function are closely linked, and skin acts as the first line of defence, but like any new security guard on their first shift, it’s still figuring out what counts as a genuine threat. This is why baby skin often reacts more quickly to environmental triggers, not because it’s faulty, but because it's still getting the hang of things.
As a result, things that adult skin barely notices can cause redness, dryness, or sensitivity for babies. This is common while the immune system learns what’s harmless and what isn’t, and this is why conditions like eczema, cradle cap, and contact irritation are so common in early childhood. Baby skincare needs to not only be gentle, but also soothing and supportive while helping to reduce unnecessary inflammation to help skin build its resilience.
Why Gentle Skincare Is A Must
When you put all this together, thinner skin, higher absorption, a developing pH balance, and a young immune system, it's clear that baby skin requires special attention. Gentle skincare is beneficial at every age, but baby skin needs it most during this time of early development. Their skin simply doesn’t have the built-in safeguards that adult skin usually has. The goal isn’t to “treat” baby skin but rather protect it while it develops naturally.
Gentle, intentional skincare choices help support skin barrier function, preserve moisture, and minimize irritation. When baby skin is given space to strengthen without being overwhelmed, it’s better equipped to handle the bumps, scrapes, dribbles, and general chaos of growing up, as it was meant to. If there’s a golden rule for baby skincare, it’s this: simple, gentle, natural formulas are best. In short, gentle skincare isn’t optional for babies, it’s foundational.
Why We’re So Passionate About It
We created the MooGoo Baby Range when our own little ones came along because we wanted to know exactly what we were putting on their skin. All the ingredients we use in our products are natural, healthy and gentle. We make fuss-free skincare for the fussiest customer (babies!), that gives parents peace of mind. So, say rock-a-BYE to irritated skin and hello to smooth baby buns. Here are our 3 easy steps to make your babies’ skin happy, healthy, and protected.
Step 1 – Wash
Babies need bubbles as much as they need clean, healthy, and happy skin. What they don’t need though is harmful, stripping ingredients like soap and SLS. Our 2-1 Bubbly Wash keeps skin clean with the most gentle ingredients and soothing ingredients so your baby will emerge from the bath as smooth as a baby’s…well, you know.
Step 2 - Protect
All parents know, the diaper area is one of the crankiest patches of them all. The culprit? Diaper rash. Diaper rash can be caused by several things, including infrequent changes, new foods, antibiotics, or simply excessive friction. It’s important to address the cause and not just the symptoms, so we’ve added hard-working, soothing and anti-yeast ingredients to our Diaper Cream, while Zinc acts as a physical barrier to provide protection from irritation for healing.
Step 3 - Moisturize
The last step is moisturizing! Once your baby is dry, lather a lightweight moisturiser all over their little faces and squishy limbs. For this we recommend our Soothing Nut-Oil Free Moisturizer. It’s made with our favourite skin-soothing superstars, including MSM, and absolutely nut-thing nasty. The best way to apply it is with a relaxing baby massage.
