Let's Chat About Rosacea

If your skin’s been red, dry or reactive, you're not alone. Rosacea affects 1 in 10 and shows up as flushing, redness and sensitivity across the face, and sometimes even the scalp, eyes, ears and neck. People with fair skin and those who blush easily are also more likely to experience Rosacea.

One big trigger? Histamines - a natural chemical in the body that causes itching and flushing when released into the bloodstream. And in winter, things can really kick off. Cold winds, dry air and cranked-up heaters can weaken your skin barrier, especially if your skin is already sensitive. Throw in a hot coffee (guilty!) or a steamy shower, and you’ve got the perfect storm. The good news? There are simple ways to calm things down.

Firstly, What Triggers Rosacea?

  • Foods like bananas, dairy-based products or spice.

  • Drinks such as caffeine, alcohol (red wine specifically) and sugary beverages.

  • Extreme weather temperatures or sudden changes in the temperature, strong winds.

  • Sun exposure can cause inflammation and increase sensitivity due to the UV radiation.

  • Skincare with irritating and/or synthetic ingredients.

  • Medications that dilate blood vessels.

  • Stress and anxiety.

There have been some studies that indicate Rosacea can also be caused by an imbalance in the gut flora, which is often caused by antibiotic use or diet. We recommend you do your own research to narrow down what is triggering yours.

What Does MooGoo Suggest?

1. Be Gentle With Your Barrier

Use a soap-free cleanser (like our Milk Wash or Ultra Gentle Cleanser with Ceramides) to cleanse your face and body. Both formulas are made using a combination of gentle, natural, non-irritating coconut and glucose-based cleansers to provide a thorough and effective cleanse, while not stripping the skin and providing it with some gentle hydration.

We always recommend our Soothing MSM Moisturizer to help soothe Rosacea. This is because it’s made with nourishing skin repairing ingredients (Aloe Vera, Sweet Almond Oil, Squalane, Honey, Allantoin & Vitamin E), as well as MSM (Organic Sulphur), which is well-known and loved for its skin-calming and nutritional properties. A gentle, repairing moisturizer will help to restore the skin's barrier and guard against flare-ups caused by your surrounding environment.

2. Hydrate, Inside & Out

Rosacea-prone skin loves moisture, so give it as much as you can. Add a serum under your moisturizer, like our Hyaluronic Acid & Niacinamide Active Serum, for a calming, mega hydration boost that lasts all day and night.

Drinking 2-3L of water daily has many health benefits, but it's also beneficial for managing Rosacea symptoms and flare-ups. Sufficient water regulates body temperature and prevents dehydration, which can exacerbate Rosacea.

3. Ditch Hot Showers & Steamy Rooms

Hot water and sudden temperature changes can trigger flushing. Use lukewarm instead of hot or cold, and avoid blasting the heater indoors. A humidifier can also be super helpful for a bit of extra hydration.

4. Protect From The Elements

Cold air and wind can worsen symptoms. Applying moisturizer works like a mini windbreaker, and a scarf helps too!

Bonus Tip: Skip The Strong Actives

If your skin's flaring up, avoid harsh actives or exfoliants. Now’s the time to keep things simple; your skin will thank you!

If you're on the hunt for skincare free from irritating, synthetic ingredients, then MooGoo is for you!
