Our skin secretes a mixture of fat, waxes and sweat. Combine this with pollution in the form of dust, chemicals and dirt, then mix in make-up, waterproof sunscreen etc., and you have the makings for some very dirty skin. The point of cleansing is to remove all this, but, it can be difficult to remove heavier, oil-based moisturizer and/or SPF with water-based cleansers (most cleansers are).
A truly effective cleansing routine includes an oil-based cleanser because they provide a thorough clean to remove deep down debris, impurities and tougher stuff like waterproof makeup.
Cleansing with oil is the new black
“Oil cleansing method” is a way of cleansing the skin using oils and massage. It sounds counterintuitive, especially for those with oily skin types, but it has amazing benefits for all skin types, particularly those with drier skin and/or prone to blemishes.
Cleansing oils are hydrophilic, which means they can be washed off and dissolved easily, and there's no build-up or heavy film left behind. They work by using like-attracts-like technology (cleansing oils meet surface oils, they do a little dance, and get washed away together), leaving your skin balanced and not-at-all-stripped, tight or dry. The massage part helps the oil get deeper in your pores to do its work, and who doesn't love a good massage?
We wish more people knew about the plethora of benefits that come with oil-cleansing, but it’s hard to undo decades of skincare superstitions like "using oils on your skin gives you pimples".
To find out more, check out our blog post Why Cleanse With Oil?
A bit more nitty gritty
We made this formula using a mixture of drawing and moisturizing oils. The drawing oils help pull out and dissolve old, hardened oils (often mistaken for blackheads) from within the pores, while the moisturizing oils help keep skin soft and hydrated.
If your skin is tight and dry, it will love the added nourishment these carefully selected oils provide. If your skin is oily, the oils will dissolve excess, stagnant surface oils and wash away pollutants that can often cause unwanted congestion in the pores.
As well as getting the cleaning job done, there’s quite a bit more about our formula that we'd like to brag about. It gets down and dirty to combat congestion, banishes bacteria and helps regulate oil production. It also contains no parabens or other synthetic preservatives like yucky phenoxyethanol.
Double down with a double cleanse
Cleansing with oil is 1 step in the process of double cleansing, which involves a 2-step process of face washing. It might seem like a new trend, but it actually originated in Korea in the 14th century and has recently become a global skincare routine staple. We highly recommend getting onboard with this if you're not already.
We even wrote a detailed blog post about it (The Importance of Double Cleansing) that breaks down the different ways you can double cleanse as well as delves more into how it's done and why it's so beneficial. Enjoy!

Because we make our products for our families, we have a strict ingredient philosophy that excludes ingredients like Parabens and Phenoxyethanol.
We show all of the ingredients we use in our products on our website, not just the pretty ones. That way you know exactly what's in each one, and can get in touch if you have any more questions.
Please be aware that the ingredients we use in our formulas may be updated occasionally and therefore vary from time to time. Please refer to the ingredient list on the product packaging for the most up-to-date and relevant list of ingredients.
How do you use Oil Cleansing Method?
To use an oil cleanser, we recommend applying the product to dry hands, and massaging into a dry face; it feels really nice. Once you feel that your face has been thoroughly covered, you can then add a bit of water. Start by wetting the hands, and then further massaging the face, giving an emulsifying effect. You’ll notice the cleanser will start to come off the skin in a nice milky colour (please, do this for more than twenty seconds! You will thank us if you do!)
Once the oil has been completely washed off, you can follow with a cleanser like our Creamy Hydrating Face Cleanser, or our Gentle Foaming Face Cleanser to gently remove any excess oil/product. Or simply leave your skin as is and sit back and enjoy the wondrous feeling of hydrated skin, whatever you prefer.
If you're looking for an even deeper cleanse, once the oil has been rubbed in, apply a warm washcloth over your face to encourage your pores to open. This will help bring old oils, waxes and dirt to the surface, literally steaming them out of your skin so they can be washed away. Once cooled, remove the cloth, rinse or wipe off the excess product and follow with the application of an active serum.
What type of skin is Oil Cleansing Method best for?
This cleanser is made for absolutely anyone and everyone but it’s especially effective for those with blemish-prone and drier skin types. We don’t believe in blasting skin with harsh detergents or bleaching ingredients to keep blemishes at bay. Stripping the skin of its natural oils can leave skin dreadfully dry, damaged and distressed. Not to mention it can kick it into oil-making overdrive, causing congestion which can lead to even more breakouts. This is designed to dissolve excess and hardened oil deep in the pores as well as help regulate the skin’s oil production while keep skin nicely nourished. It’s so suitable for all skin types, genders and ages, including the fussiest of teenagers.
Can Oil Cleansing Method only be used on the face?
While our Oil Cleansing Method was designed to carefully and kindly wash the face, you can most certainly use this formula wherever you like, from head to toe. Most commercial face wash products are made with sulfates and detergents that clean the skin but can also often strip it of its natural oils. This gentle formula is made with high-quality oils and skin-friendly, natural ingredients so we highly recommend using it on other parts of your body so they can also reap the benefits of this wonderful wash. Now you’ve got a masterful multi-tasker. We’ve heard it does wonders for the neck and decolletage too, so don’t forget to pamper them too.
Is Oil Cleansing Method safe for lash extensions?
Oils can break down the glue used, so steer clear of using any oil-based cleanser in the eye area while you’ve got lash extensions on.
What is double-cleansing and what products do you recommend?
Double cleansing is where you wash your face twice in the same go, once with an oil-based cleanser and once with a water-based cleanser, one after the other. The order in which you do these comes down to personal preference. Some like to use the oil-based cleanser first (like our Oil Cleansing Method) to remove heavier makeup and SPF products, followed by the water-based cleanser (like our Creamy Hydrating Face Cleanser or our Gentle Foaming Face Cleanser) to do the final clean sweep. Others like to let the water-based cleanser do the first pass and finish up with the oil-based cleanser to get even deeper into the pores and leave a sheeny residue on the skin. Haven’t tried double-cleansing yet? It’s so hot right now. We highly recommend doing this at least once a week to give your skin that extra once (or twice) over for the ultimate deep clean.
We also recommend a routine with regular, but gentle exfoliation to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin for a fresher, brighter, more radiant complexion. Our Gentle Exfoliating Micro Powder takes on double duty with its 2-pronged approach to exfoliation, physical and enzymatic, to clear away dirt, debris, impurities and congestion.
Is Oil Cleansing Method made of milk?
We aren’t called MooGoo because our products are made with milk. Putting fresh milk into a skincare product and putting it on a shelf would not end well.
Is Oil Cleansing Method suitable for children?
Our Oil Cleansing Method is made for the whole family! For all ages, from adults to children, and everything in between. If allergies are a concern, as with all natural products, we recommend doing a patch test before use.
What is the pH level of your products?
Our Oil Cleansing Method is slightly acidic, balanced to the pH of human skin at 5.5 to 6.0. pH is measured from 0 to 14 depending on how acidic or alkaline a substance is.
Healthy skin can retain moisture, maintain a robust microbiome and keep irritants away. Using a cleanser that's pH balanced to match our skin is one of the best ways to support this.
I have sensitive skin; will I react to Oil Cleansing Method?
Everybody is different and what works for some will not for others, and some people have allergies to natural ingredients. We believe that natural ingredients are gentler on the skin and are particularly suitable for those with sensitivities. If you experience any skin issues, we always recommend doing a patch test before use.
Are your products tested on animals?
The only animals we use for testing are our own bodies. We never test on animals and will not export to countries that do.
Are natural cleansers good for your skin?
Detergents and sulfates like SLS, which are often found in skin wash products are also used in commercial floor cleaning products. We think these strip out and wash away too much oil and moisture from the skin, often causing itchiness, irritation and dryness. We think switching to a gentler, more natural face wash is one of the best things you can do for your skin.
Is natural face wash better for the environment?
Natural cleansers are also much better for the environment when they’re washed down the drain and enter our waterways as they break down more quickly than synthetic ingredients.
Does natural face wash work?
Natural face washes work just as well at washing the skin as their synthetic counterparts. But the foam and suds created by cleansers in natural cleaners is noticeably less than those made by their commercial counterparts, which can make it feel less effective. We think this trade-off is well worth the extra benefit.
Why are natural cleansing products better?
Natural cleansing products are made with natural cleansing ingredients that don’t strip the skin of their natural oils. Natural cleansers also break down faster once they reach our waterways.
Why does face wash make my skin tight and itchy?
Detergents and sulfates like SLS, are often found in wash products can strip out and wash away a lot of the natural oil and moisture from the skin, often causing itchiness, irritation and dryness.
What kind of cleanser is best for sensitive skin / skin issues?
The best kind of cleanser for sensitive skin or skin prone to eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis is one that can gently and effectively keep it clean without stripping it of its natural, protective oils and not cause further irritation.
Harshly stripping the skin can compromise skin barrier function, which can cause moisture to escape causing dryness, and unwanted irritants to get in causing skin reactions to flare-up, stick around and come back uninvited.
